Arrival in Granada

Friday was a travel day, as we took the train from Sevilla to Granada, arriving in the afternoon. Our hotel is right on a main plaza, and Granada feels like a very big city, with crowds of people jamming the narrow sidewalks. We had a good lunch at about 4pm, then took a walk around the center of the city.

Christopher Columbus (Colón) sailed from Spain to America in 1492 (proving that people would not fall off the edge of the earth when they sailed far out into the Atlantic Ocean). Queen Isabella of Spain paid for his expedition, and a statue here in Granada shows Columbus asking Isabella for the money he needed. You can see the statue below.

We walked through an area called the Bib-Rambla, which has been a market square for hundreds of years. I saw huge stacks of cheese and bread; you can see the bread below. I also got a photo of a fancy statue at the bottom of a light pole, with a snarling dragon. Nobody seemed to be scared, maybe because he seems to be vegetarian.

As the sun was setting, we walked uphill beside a wall above a small river, along with LOTS of people. Street musicians were playing drums, guitars, violins, and saxophones. When we returned to the plaza, the sun was shining on a church and you can see that it was a beautiful evening.
